Halochoscope

Halochoscope is a weekly newsletter of Shaalos U’teshuvos (“Questions and Answers”) concerning modern applications of halakha (Jewish religious law). Rabbi Shimon Silver launched the publication in Pittsburgh in January 1993. Each issue tackles a real-world question by reviewing and analyzing the relevant halakhic concepts. Issues often end with a short feature connecting the themes of the question to the weekly Torah portion.

Rabbi Shimon Silver was born in London, England in 1960. He was educated at Hasmonean Grammar School. After graduating with his ‘O-levels,’ he stayed on two more years for his A-levels before attending Gateshead Yeshiva, where he studied under R’ Leib Gurwicz, R’ Leib Lopian, R’ Moshe Schwab, and R’ Avrohom Gurwicz and R’ Mattisyahu Salomon, among others. Rabbi Silver began his studies in Beth Medrash Govoha in 1982 and earned his rabbinic ordination from the institution in 1985.

Rabbi Silver has served as a founding Kollel fellow at the West Side Kollel in Manhattan, a member of the Kollel Jewish Learning Center in Pittsburgh, rabbi of Shaare Tefillah Congregation, (the “Russian Shul”), and Bais Medrash rebbe at the Mesivta of Greater Pittsburgh in White Oak, Pa. He also served as Rav and acting Menahel of Hillel Academy. He has been the spiritual leader of Young Israel of Greater Pittsburgh since 2004. He also serves as the supervising Rav of the Pittsburgh Eruv and the Pittsburgh Mikvah. He is a member of the Vaad Halacha of the National Council of Young Israel.
