Stanley Glickstein (b. 1933) is a retired physicist who worked at the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory for 35 years. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Esther Lenchitz Glickstein (1907–1992) and Morris Glickstein (1908–1997). He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1952 and earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1955. He received his Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics from Pennsylvania State University in 1961.
Following completion of his doctorate, Glickstein held a postdoctoral position in the Department of Physics at Princeton University. In 1964, he joined the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory in West Mifflin, Pa., as a Senior Scientist. He remained there until his retirement as an Advisory Scientist in 1999. He and his wife settled in Pleasant Hills, Pennsylvania, where they raised their four children: Steven, Barbara, Karen, and Cathy.
Joan Katz Glickstein (1934–2015) was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Sidney Katz (1910–1977) and Elsie Jablonsky Katz (1912–1991). She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1951. She received a bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College, majoring in speech pathology in 1955, and earned a Master of Science in Clinical Speech from Pennsylvania State University in 1957.
While her husband pursued graduate studies, Joan Glickstein worked as a speech therapist in rural school districts near University Park, Pa. During the couple’s time in Princeton, she was employed part-time as a speech therapist with Easter Seals. After relocating to the Pittsburgh area, she worked at St. Margaret Hospital and continued her education at the University of Pittsburgh, where she earned a Ph.D. in 1978 from the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.
Joan Glickstein became a national leader in the training of medical professionals working with individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. She authored one of the earliest manuals on dementia care and lectured extensively at both regional and national levels on best practices in treatment and caregiving. Joan self-published a book titled Fighting Back before it was retitled Therapeutic Interventions in Alzheimer’s Disease by Aspen Publishers. Her second major publication was Reimbursable Geriatric Service Delivery: A Functional Maintenance Therapy. Joan was also editor of the Focus on Geriatric Care & Rehabilitation newsletter of which she received awards for.
Stanley and Joan Glickstein were active members of Beth Israel Center in Pleasant Hills. Joan was an active member of the Beth Israel Center Sisterhood and edited the its cookbook. Stanley served as president of the congregation and the men’s club, as chairman of the Religious Affairs Committee and was a Sunday school teacher, Both received numerous awards for their professional accomplishments and for their service to Jewish and community organizations in the Pittsburgh area. Joan was awarded the Charles W. Pruitt Jr. Award for Excellence from the Southwestern Pennsylvania Partnership for Aging for her dedication to the aging community.
