Wolff Mendel (1837-1911) immigrated to Pittsburgh from Andernach, Germany, in 1893 with his wife Caroline Prager Mendel and three of their seven children, Ludwig, Eugenia and Betty. Their children Sol, Emma, Leo and Dina immigrated at another time.
The Mendel family appears to have chosen Pittsburgh because they knew members of the Kaufmann family in Germany. In Pittsburgh, several of the Mendel children eventually worked for Kaufmann’s Department Store. Betty Mendel married Isidore Jacobs.
