The Jewish Children’s School was a Yiddish secular school sponsored by the International Workers Order Branch 160. The school operated branches in the Hill District and Squirrel Hill, often utilizing Icor Centers in those neighborhoods.
The school started no later than 1934 and appears to have been discontinued in the 1940s or 1950s, as the International Workers Order came under increased government scrutiny during the Red Scare.
Addresses associated with the Jewish Children’s School of the International Workers Order include the Irene Kaufmann Settlement House at 1835 Centre Ave., and the Icor Centers at 1532 Centre Ave., 1909 Murray Ave., and 2200 Murray Ave.
Surviving documentation references an associated “Women’s Educational Group,” which helped support the school by overseeing many of its educational and financial needs.
