David Hadburg (1915-1996) joined the U.S. Army in 1943 as a Volunteer Officer Candidate. He was one of the last Pittsburghers accepted under the short-lived training program for men who voluntarily enlisted rather than claim a deferral for dependency.
After completing chemical warfare officers’ candidate school in 1944, Hadburg was stationed in the Pacific Theater as a second lieutenant during the final years of World War II. He spent the months after the war in the China Staging Area and was promoted to first lieutenant.
A graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University, Hadburg had married Margaret Morrison Carnegie College graduate Ruth Flora Shapiro (d. 1989) in 1941. They couple had two sons, Bruce Paul Hadburg and Benjie K. Hadburg.
