Goldstein’s Restaurant was located at 1002 Fifth Ave. in the Uptown section of Pittsburgh. Sam, Alfred and Murray Goldstein began as hucksters, delivering fruit by horse and wagon from their home on the Bluff to locations throughout the West End of the city. The brothers eventually established a restaurant at 1002 Fifth Ave. in 1933.
Goldstein’s Restaurant was a popular destination among local sports figures. It was a preferred stop for local and visiting boxers who trained at the nearby Lyceum, as well as basketball stars from nearby Duquesne University. It was also popular among local politicians such as Mayor David L. Lawrence, Mayor Joseph Barr, County Commissioner Thomas J. Foerster, and Judge James F. Clarke, as well as actors and other celebrities.
The Goldstein brothers sold the restaurant in 1972. The building later became the Fifth Avenue Inn, which was destroyed in late 1975 in a fire later determined to be arson.
