Dorothy Kaufman (d. 1991) grew up in the Monongahela River town of California, Pa., and attended the California Normal School before graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1921. She married Benjamin Stein. They had a daughter, Millicent Stein.
Dorothy Kaufman Stein was active in the local chapter of Hadassah. In a 1980 letter to the Pittsburgh Press, she wrote, “All the tiny islands, as in the Caribbean area, have sought and brought to themselves independence. All of the smallest countries desire freedom. Each feels a need for his ancestral home. Only the Jews, who had it, and by biblical injunction loved it and welcomed that land, and made it fruitful again, are to be denied.”
