Esther and Isadore Klein family immigrated from Hungary to McKeesport, Pa., where they raised two sons, Burton and Alvin. The Klein family owned and operated the Vienna Baking Company and later, the Tastemaster Bread Company. In a 1989 profile in the Pittsburgh Press, Burton Klein recalled visiting the bakery as a small child and watching the workmen move the loaves in and out of the giant oven using fifteen-foot paddles.
