The Jewish communities along the Monongahela River south of Pittsburgh often joined together to create Jewish institutions, such as the Monongahela Valley YMHA. The organization included members from “California, Coal Centre, Roscoe, Brownsville, Charleroi and of many other towns of this valley,” according to a report in the Jewish Criterion.
