Beth Israel Center held its first bar mitzvah ceremony in 1960, when future Rodef Shalom Congregation Executive Director Jeff Herzog turned 13. The occasion occurred before the congregation had built its synagogue, and the ceremony was held instead at the Pleasant Hills Presbyterian Church.
