A group of liberal Jews founded the “Hebrew Congregation of Uniontown” at a meeting at the Standard Club. A canvassing of those present, including Joseph Michael, raised $1,235 for the congregation. The charter members hired Dr. Isadore Reichert to serve as their first rabbi at an annual salary of $1,200. Within a few weeks, the congregation changed its name to Temple Israel.
