As members of the future Beth Israel Center prepared their bylaws, the executive board debated whether their new institution would be a primarily a spiritually oriented “synagogue,” a socially oriented “center” or a hybrid “community.” They chose the name “Beth Israel,” meaning “House of Israel.”
